emo-1(oz151) null mutants are embryonic lethal; with the germline-specific allele emo-1(oz1), mutants fail to ovulate after meiotic maturation, leading to endomitosis of oocytes in the gonad arm.
emo-1(oz1) oocytes fail to stain with an antibody (J67) which recognizes a surface antigen of oocytes, indicating that emo-1(oz1) blocks protein transport.
A model for EMO-1 function is that it promotes the synthesis of a secreted or surface protein of oocytes which, in turn, is required for the oocyte to signal the sheath, the spermetheca, or both after meiotic maturation.
