Structured_description Provisional_description gly-8 encodes a predicted transmembrane polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyl transferase (ppGaNTase) similar to the essential Drosophila ppGaNTase encoded by Pgant35A; by homology, GLY-8 is predicted to function as a Golgi enzyme that catalyzes transfer of N-acetylgalactosamine to serine and threonine-containing acceptor peptides, thus initiating mucin-type O-glycosylation; as loss of gly-8 activity via large-scale RNAi screens does not result in any obvious abnormalities, the precise role of GLY-8 in C. elegans development and/or behavior is not yet known. GLY-8 is distinct from other C. elegans GalNAc transferases in that it does not contain a C-terminal ricin-like lectin domain, the function of which is not yet known.

RemarkMap position created from combination of previous interpolated map position (based on known location of sequence) and allele information. Therefore this is not a genetic map position based on recombination frequencies or genetic experiments. This was done on advice of the CGC.CGC_data_submission
