Description of "F59B2.6"  zif-1 encodes a SOCS-box protein that promotes establishment of the germ line by targetting germline proteins for cullin-dependent degradation in non-germline (somatic) cells; ZIF-1 binds germline CCCH-(zinc)-finger proteins and the E3 ubiquitin ligase subunit elongin C (ELC-1); while ZIF-1 has no obvious homologs, it may be analogous to the Drosophila SOCS-box protein GUSTAVUS, which is required for VASA localization to the germline and which does have mammalian homologs.
